Motorola’s upcoming smartphone in India, the Edge 50 Neo, will receive five years of Android OS upgrades — a first for the company.

This information was spotted in promotional material on the e-commerce site Flipkart, which also mentions that the device will be available for purchase starting September 16th.

This move from Motorola is surprising, as the more expensive models in the Motorola Edge 50 series, the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra and the Motorola Edge 50 Pro, are only set to receive three years of Android OS updates.

Unlike brands like Google or Samsung, which offer seven years of Android OS updates on most of their devices, Motorola has traditionally provided just two years of Android updates for its budget smartphones and three years for its flagship models. As a consequence, some owners stop getting upgrades before they’re ready to replace their phones.

The Motorola Edge 50 Neo comes with Android 14 out of the box, and the five years of Android updates should have it supported through Android 19. Additionally, it should receive security updates until 2029. In comparison, the Motorola Edge 50 Neo’s rivals, the Samsung Galaxy A55 and the OnePlus Nord 4, will get four years of Android updates.

The Motorola handset runs on the Dimensity 7300 chipset and is available in two variants — one with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, and another with 12GB RAM and 512GB storage. A 4,310mAh battery powers the device, supporting 68W wired and 15W wireless charging.

On the back, the smartphone has a triple-camera setup, with a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide lens, and a 3X telephoto lens. For selfies, the device includes a 32MP front-facing camera.

The Motorola Edge 50 Neo is priced at €499 in the European market; however, its pricing in India is still unknown. Most likely, it will be revealed at launch. The smartphone is set to launch in India on Monday, September 16, at noon, with a one-hour flash sale on Flipkart.
