CD Projekt Red has announced the development of a new animated series set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.
The announcement was made during the company’s quarterly earnings call on Monday, where the studio also shared milestones for its popular game franchise.
According to CFO Piotr Nielubowicz, sales of Cyberpunk 2077 have surpassed 30 million copies, with the Phantom Liberty expansion selling eight million units.
The success of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners series, which debuted on Netflix in 2022, has played a significant role in rejuvenating the game’s reputation.
Produced in collaboration with Studio Trigger, Edgerunners offered a new perspective on Night City, distinct from the game’s narrative. While details about the new animated project remain scarce, Nielubowicz emphasized its importance to the franchise’s growing fanbase. However, he did not confirm whether Studio Trigger will return for the new project.
Given the conclusion of Edgerunners, a direct sequel seems unlikely. However, the vast lore of Night City offers opportunities to explore fresh narratives, possibly delving into the lives of Nomads, Corpos, or other overlooked groups in the dystopian world.
The announcement reflects CD Projekt Red’s broader ambitions. The company is currently juggling several major projects, including a Cyberpunk sequel (codenamed Project Orion), the highly anticipated Witcher 4, a remake of the original Witcher, and a standalone Witcher spin-off. The studio confirmed earlier this week that Witcher 4 has entered full-scale production.
