Nintendo has officially announced its acquisition of Shiver Entertainment, a game development studio previously owned by Embracer Group.
This strategic move marks a significant step for Nintendo, known for its cautious acquisition approach. Shiver Entertainment, based in Miami, Florida, is renowned for its expertise in porting and developing games for various platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. The studio has worked on high-profile titles such as Mortal Kombat 11, Mortal Kombat 1, and Hogwarts Legacy.
Nintendo will acquire 100% of Shiver Entertainment’s outstanding shares, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary. In its notice of acquisition, published on May 21, Nintendo emphasized that Shiver’s focus would remain unchanged.
“Going forward, even after it becomes a part of the Nintendo group, Shiver’s focus will remain the same, continuing commissions that port and develop software for multiple platforms, including Nintendo Switch,” reads the document.
This move aligns with Nintendo’s broader strategy to expand its development capabilities. Over the past few years, Nintendo has made a few selective acquisitions, including SRD Studio in 2022 and Next Level Games in 2021. Additionally, Nintendo is investing heavily in its internal development resources, with plans to complete a new development center by 2028.
The acquisition comes amid a wave of consolidation in the gaming industry, with many companies seeking to bolster their portfolios and development capabilities after waves of layoffs.
For Nintendo, this acquisition is part of a balanced approach that includes building internal resources while maintaining strong relationships with third-party developers. Incidentally, Square Enix has recently unveiled a similar strategy.
Shiver Entertainment, founded in 2012 by industry veterans John Schappert and Jason Andersen, brings a wealth of experience to Nintendo. The studio’s track record includes collaborations with major publishers on series like Scribblenauts, Need for Speed, Guitar Hero, FIFA, and Madden NFL. Initially acquired by Embracer Group in 2021, Shiver has found a new home under Nintendo’s wing.
The news comes roughly a month after Embracer Group announced splitting into three distinct entities.
