Nintendo Made a Joy-Con Charging Stand 7 Years Late

Key Takeaways

  • Nintendo has finally unveiled an official Joy-Con stand for the Switch.
  • This will support charging up to two Joy-Cons at once via USB-C connectivity.
  • It’s strange timing, landing seven years after the Switch launch and ahead of the Switch 2 release.

Nintendo has announced an official Joy-Con charging stand for Switch controllers, seven years after the popular handheld console’s launch.

Players will be able to charge up to two controllers without attaching them to the Switch. The charging stand draws power from the Switch dock’s USB-C port or a separate power adapter and will also support compatible wireless NES gamepads.

While this is great news for anyone who usually leaves their Switch docked and connected to the TV, it seems like strange timing. An official charging stand would have been more helpful when the Switch launched seven years ago.

As the original console approaches the end of its lifecycle, we’re expecting the Nintendo Switch 2 to land before the end of Nintendo’s fiscal year (March 2025).

We don’t yet know whether the Switch 2 will support the original Joy-Cons, so anyone planning on upgrading might want to wait and see whether that’s the case before investing in the new charging accessory.

Official Joy-Con Charging Arrives in October

The new stand will be available from October 17th, though there’s no word yet on pricing. This is just a few weeks after The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom arrives, alongside the Hyrule Edition Switch Lite.

There’s also no word yet on a North American launch, with the charging stand only being announced for Europe and Japan so far.

For those who can’t wait until October, there are already some excellent third-party options available, including the Nintendo-licensed Hori Joy-Con Charge Stand, which supports up to four controllers.
