Key Takeaways

  • Nothing is set to launch a new variant of the Phone (2a), designed in collaboration with the community.
  • The phone features a green back, incorporating portions that use luminous material.
  • The luminous material glows in the dark without the need for any electric current.

The UK-based tech startup Nothing will officially announce the variant of the Nothing Phone (2a) it designed in collaboration with the community.

Nothing’s Phone (2a) has so many variations that it’s challenging to keep track of them all. Since the phone’s launch in March, Nothing has added more Phone (2a) colorways every few months, alongside a souped-up Plus variant, and is adding yet another to the fold.

The company recently announced its plans to launch the new edition on October 30.

Nothing Phone (2a) Design

Unlike the other editions, where the Nothing team was fully responsible for the fit and finish of the various color options, the upcoming edition is designed in collaboration with its community of fans. The variant, therefore, is fittingly called Nothing Phone (2a) Community Edition. This will be the fifth color option Nothing offers for the phone.

In its typical fashion of correlating products with natural organisms, mostly insects, Nothing teased the launch of the new edition of the Phone (2a) using a firefly. The neon green on the firefly’s ventral end is a semiographic of the already finalized design of the Community Edition phone, which comes with glow-in-the-dark neon green elements under the back panel.

In brighter scenarios light, the Phone (2a) Community Edition adorns a shade of pistachio-like green. The design was confirmed in May, and Nothing has since spent efforts engaging the community to finalize special wallpapers, packaging, and a marketing campaign around the phosphorescent elements.

At the time of its initial announcement, Nothing had confirmed the radiating elements to be passive, such that they absorb light and then radiate it in the absence of light without any electric current required. Nothing did not reveal the exact chemical compound used for its luminescent properties.

Nothing Phone (2a) Design Features

The focus of engaging the community was strictly limited to the design—more specifically the colors, so Nothing is unlikely to fiddle with the specifications. That means the Nothing Phone (2a) Community Edition will have the same MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset and the same 6.7-inch AMOLED display on the front. The camera module also appears untouched from the teasers, and we could see the 50MP+50MP duo retained.

On paper, options with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB storage feel plenty for the mid-ranger, so Nothing is unlikely to bump those up. We hope the pricing to be the same as the other variants but will know for sure on October 30 at the official launch.

Earlier this month, Nothing released Android 15-based Nothing OS 3.0 in beta for the Nothing Phone (2a).
