Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the latest device to undergo the JerryRigEverything durability test, which has raised concerns in a number of areas.
Popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything (Zack Nelson) has put the tech giant’s second-generation Pixel 9 Pro Fold through his gruelling durability test.
The foldable phone is subjected to scratch, scrape, flame, and the ultimate bend test. Recall, the first-generation Pixel Fold had snapped in half during the test. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s competitors including the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and OnePlus Open have successfully passed the YouTuber’s durability test.
The durability test begins with Nelson scratching the Gorilla Glass Victus 2-protected main display on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It develops scratches at level 6 Mohs hardness scale with deeper grooves at level 7. The internal screen being ultra-thin glass gets scratched at level 2, which is a common occurrence on foldable phones. The YouTuber also adds that it is capable of getting permanent fingernail marks. Next, the recycled aluminium frame of the device gets scraped from all sides.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is exposed to dust and small rocks. Nelson notes that the phone is IPX8-rated water resistant and does not have dust protection. Hence, dust finds its way inside the device and the hinge starts making a grinding noise. In the burn tests, the internal display withstands flames for 25 seconds after the spot gets a permanent dead pixel. Meanwhile, the main screen remains unharmed.
In the final part, the YouTuber conducts the ultimate bend test. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold survives bending with ample pressure from both sides when in its folded state. Unfortunately, the device meets the same fate as its predecessor when it is bent unfolded. The foldable phone snaps in two and damages the main display and also unclips it in the process.
Nelson states that the hinge is durable and intact but the antenna line is responsible for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s failure to withstand the bending. This was true of the first-generation Pixel Fold.
