The comeback of the Flappy Bird game has sparked curiosity after cybersecurity researcher, Varun Biniwale, uncovered some strange findings.

A few hidden pages on the Flappy Bird website suggest that the game’s return is linked to cryptocurrency.

Biniwale discovered a community page on the Flappy Bird website that contains a “collaboration” link. Opening this link led to a page with information about Flappy Bird and the blockchain platform Solana, featuring its native cryptocurrency, SOL.

Biniwale says that the mention of Solana suggests that the original motive behind the revival of Flappy Bird is tied to cryptocurrency and Web 3. The Flappy Bird website is built using WordPress, which allows its sitemap to be easily viewed by the public.

The involvement of cryptocurrency isn’t the only noteworthy factor around the return of Flappy Bird. The game’s original developer, Dong Nguyen, posted on X for the first time since 2017, revealing that he is not involved in the game’s return.

The Flappy Bird Foundation, which is releasing the game, mentioned in the announcement that it had “acquired the rights from Gametech Holdings, LLC,” which had already secured the trademark from Nguyen. However, Nguyen made it clear through his tweet that he never sold the trademark to anyone.

Nguyen pulled the original Flappy Bird from the app stores in 2014 and never released it or any other version. Gametech, on the other hand, filed an opposition to Nguyen’s trademark on Flappy Bird in 2023, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruled against Nguyen, resulting in him losing the claim to the trademark. What likely happened is that after Nguyen lost the trademark claim, it was transferred to Gametech, which then passed it to the Flappy Bird Foundation.

The bottom line is that the new Flappy Bird game will definitely be released, but it will include some sort of cryptocurrency integration and have zero connection to the original developer, Dong Nguyen.
