Roku Unveils Ultra 2024 Model with 30% Faster Performance and AI

Roku has unveiled the Roku Ultra 2024, which is 30% faster than the original Roku Ultra launched in 2015.

The new Ultra features a quad-core CPU designed for cinematic streaming and is 30% faster than any of Roku’s players. It offers Wi-Fi 6 support, which gives it an edge over the Google TV Streamer, which offers Wi-Fi 5. However, it still falls behind Amazon Fire TV, which has Wi-Fi 6E connectivity.

Roku Ultra 2024: Design and Ports

Similar to the Roku Ultra (2020), the 2024 model also includes an HDMI 2.1 port and is compatible with Quick Media Switching, enabling seamless and judder-free transitions between different refresh rates. It’s important to note, though, that the TV must also support Quick Media Switching for this feature to work.

The remote also includes a USB-C port for easy charging and a built-in speaker, which is useful if it is misplaced in the house. Additionally, it features a microphone that allows voice commands to control the device.

Roku Adds AI and Other Features

Roku is also joining the AI race. The new model will use machine learning and AI to predict what users want to watch next, queuing up apps accordingly to speed up the process. The device can now also be paired with Bluetooth headphones, a feature available on the Apple TV 4K and Google TV Streamer.
In terms of appearance, the Ultra 2024 looks identical to its predecessor and continues to support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Roku has mainly focused on upgrading the remote for this new device. The Roku Ultra 2024 remote, named the Voice Remote Pro, now features backlit buttons and introduces two new buttons – Quick Launch and Live TV. The Quick Launch button allows users to access assigned shortcuts, such as their favorite streaming app or closed caption settings, while the Live TV button provides access to more than 400 free channels.

Roku is also rolling out Roku OS version 14, which will more customization than previous versions. This OS allows users to provide feedback on programming with newly added thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons. It also adds the Kids and Family section to the home screen for easy access. The new OS will be available on all compatible devices in the U.S. over the next few months.
