Samsung has reportedly set its sights on delivering the first rollable phone to the market in 2025.
The South Korean tech giant is said to be developing a device with a 12.4in rollable screen that could be available to users in the latter stages of 2025.
As initially reported by The Elec, Samsung is pushing ahead to deliver this innovative product, soon after it was pipped by Huawei on the triple-folding phone.
Not satisfied with its foldable phone launches, after bringing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 to mainstream consumers, the company is already aiming for a new breakthrough.
Prototype rollable phones have previously been showcased, like in 2020 when Oppo revealed designs for a device that could switch between a 6.7in and 7.40in format. LG also spent time working on a rollable launch but they were beaten by the clock as the company had shut down its smartphone division when the plan came to light two years ago.
The technology is therefore already in place for the South Korean flagship brand to push on to deliver the rollable phone.
Samsung Pushing for a Rollable Win for Different Reasons
The Elec stated Samsung’s product will have an under-display camera, as already utilized in some of its recent phones meaning no interruption to the main screen.
A breakthrough with a 12.4in rollable screen would present a significant win for Samsung, for different reasons. It is facing increasing competition in the smartphone sector from the likes of Huawei and Honor, and demand for its existing range of foldables has not been as strong as desired.
At this stage, the reports are tentative with no confirmed plans in place. It will be around a year, at least, before we see a possible Samsung rollable so expectations should be tempered.
