Key Takeaways

  • Samsung has released the 990 Evo Plus SSD.
  • It's up to 50% faster, even as the capacity doubles to 4TB.
  • Prices range from $110 to $345.

Samsung has introduced a 990 Evo Plus SSD that’s not only much faster than its predecessor, but has twice the capacity.

The new drive reaches sequential read speeds up to 7,250MB/s, with write speeds up to 6,300MB/s. That’s up to 50% faster than the earlier 990 Evo, Samsung claims. It achieved the feat through the combination of its latest vertical NAND (V-NAND) storage as well as a controller built on a more efficient five-nanometer process.

It also shouldn’t overheat. Samsung says the new nickel-coated heat shield should make the 990 Evo Plus 73% more efficient than before.

You also aren’t limited to 2TB. The new lineup includes a 4TB model that should have ample room for large apps, games, and media. This is also the model you want if you expect peak performance, as it has a 1,050K IOPS (input/output operations per second) random read speed and up to 1,400K for random writes.

Accordingly, you’re getting a significant amount of storage for your money. Samsung is selling the 990 Evo Plus starting at $110 for a 1TB version, $185 for 2TB, and $345 for 4TB. While that’s not trivial, it could make large-capacity SSDs more practical for gamers and others who aren’t willing to sacrifice performance.

If the performance claims hold up, this also rivals the best SSDs on the market, including those from Western Digital and other major rivals.
