Samsung has launched the Galaxy S24 FE, and it offers most of the S24 family’s performance and AI capabilities at a lower price.
The just-revealed upper mid-range smartphone has a large 6.7-inch, 1080p display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate (albeit down only to 60Hz). It also has a 4,700mAh battery that’s larger than the 4,500mAh unit in last year’s S23 FE.
As with past FE models, though, Samsung has trimmed some of the performance. The Galaxy S24 FE uses an Exynos 2400e chip that’s an unlocked version of the 2400 found in some regular S24 variants. This is a step down for people in the US and other regions where a custom Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powers the rest of the S24 line, although a larger vapor chamber than on the S23 FE should keep it running quickly for longer.
You get a 50-megapixel main camera and 12MP ultrawide comparable to those on the standard S24, but there’s a lower-resolution 8MP 3X telephoto (down from 10MP) and a 10MP selfie camera instead of a 12MP sensor.
The appeal, according to Samsung, is making Galaxy AI features more accessible. You’ll get Google’s Circle to Search, Samsung’s Interpreter translation feature (plus Live Translate), Composer for suggested text, and Note Assist to help streamline your notetaking.
The Galaxy S24 FE release date is set for October 3rd at a US starting price of $650 for 128GB of storage. You can option it up to 512GB depending on your region.
Should You Buy the Galaxy S24 FE?
The issue is simply the price. At $50, the S24 FE is $150 away from the cost of the existing S24. That’s enough of a gap at usual prices, but Samsung frequently runs sales. A 256GB S24 sells for $780 as of this writing, and you can get a 512GB S24+ for $920.
That might complicate your choice. The Galaxy S24 FE is larger than the base S24, but it’s otherwise outclassed. It might be a better deal than the similarly-sized S24+ if you’re more concerned about battery life than speed and storage, though.
It’s also worth looking for sales on the S24 FE itself. Discounts could easily make it the device that gets into Samsung’s lineup.
