Slitterhead sounds like the type of game it is, namely, one to be avoided if you don’t like horror. The title may be one you’d expect to find in a 1980s supernatural horror movie; the game is a ‘battle-action’ adventure from Silent Hill’s Keiichiro Toyama. For fright fans, the Slitterhead release date is now scarily close.
Slitterhead’s story is a twisting one, following a protagonist named Hyoki, who is described simply as an entity. Hyoki finds himself in the chaos of “Kowlong” – a place invaded by nightmarish ‘Slitterheads’ – only knowing he needs to eliminate them. When can you start to help him in his gore-strewn quest?
Let’s look at Slitterhead’s release date, gameplay, trailers, and more to decipher whether it could rank among the best upcoming horror games.
Slitterhead Release Date
Having spent three around three years in development by creator Bokeh Game Studio, Slitterhead’s release date has been confirmed as Friday, November 8, 2024. It’s interesting that the title has been penned for a post-Hallowe’en launch, which would usually seem to make more sense for anything horror-related.
However, while Slitterhead’s horror is clearly pervasive, the battle element would seem to shake it loose of needing the full atmospheric backing of the spooky season. Still, there are a lot of titles releasing in November across platforms, so it’s interesting timing for a game that may be less mainstream than others.
Slitterhead Pre-orders
Slitterhead’s pre-orders are live, and you can pick up the two editions available (three, if you include the PS5 Day 1 Edition) before launch. We’ll go through what each of those editions offers below. You can pre-order the game on the Xbox Marketplace and PlayStation Store. The game can currently only be wishlisted on Steam.
Slitterhead
The standard base game edition available for each of the platforms (PS5, PS4 Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC). It includes:
- Slitterhead
Slitterhead – Deluxe Edition
The Deluxe Edition is available for all of the game’s supported platforms and is the option to choose if you want Slitterhead early access.
Slitterhead Day 1 Edition
The Slitterhead Day 1 Edition is available for anyone wanting to pre-order Slitterhead for PS 5. This physical-only limited edition offers excellent extra content and a custom box but doesn’t include any early access.
Slitterhead Price
There are three Slitterhead price options available, but none are too outlandish. The standard edition of the game will seemingly cost $49.99 across all platforms. This is confirmed by PlayStation and Xbox store pages, although at the time of writing, the title is only available to wishlist on Steam, stating a “planned release date” of November 8.
The Deluxe Edition of the game costs $59.99 for both Xbox and PlayStation platforms. Although not cheap, it’s not as expensive as some titles and does include 72-hour early access and bonus content. PlayStation 5’s Day 1 Edition also costs $59.99 but offers physical bonuses and a custom box in place of early access.

The list of Slitterhead platforms makes for good reading for last-gen console owners. As well as arriving on the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, the game will grace the PS4 and the Xbox One too.
Slitterhead System Requirements
The game’s previous-generation versions make sense when evaluating Slitterhead’s system requirements, which are modest. Below we’ve listed the minimum and recommended specs to get the optimal gameplay experience; thankfully, you won’t need a high-end rig to enjoy this survival horror experience.

Slitterhead Trailers
The are three official Slitterhead trailers listed on creator Bokeh Game Studio’s official YouTube page, a teaser, and more recent gameplay and story trailers.
At just under one minute and 30 seconds, Slitterhead’s Teaser Trailer arrived during The Game Awards on December 10, 2021. And it… effectively introduces the horror aspect of the game. In a dark urban alley in “Kowlong”, a male office worker in a shirt and tie and carrying a bag. First, we see him from behind, but then as we look from the front, a long-haired lady wearing a short dress steps from the shadows.
Very quickly things get scary, as the lady’s face splits open and we see the terror of the man as he’s faced down by the silhouette of a grotesque skeleton monster. As the screen goes black, rock drums and a driving guitar riff kick in, as scenes of chaos, more monsters, blood, fighting, and specific characters are shown. Seeing what appears to be a possession of some sort, and a monster being vanquished the trailer cuts to black again.
Finally, we see an airliner cruising just above the top floors of densely populated buildings, very reminiscent of the demolished Kowloon Walled City, China.
Following 2021’s Teaser Trailer, the Slitterhead Gameplay Trailer was released on June 7, 2024. This trailer offers a more focused look at the title, and what we now know about Hyoki, the entity that can possess and body-switch in his quest to eliminate the Slitterheads.
The gameplay looks solid if lacking polish, but definitely doubles down on horror, fighting, and the atmosphere of Kowlong. We see characters that are featured in the teaser trailer, and new additions, all of whom appear to have individual styles during the battle-action gameplay core to the title.
A young person’s possession is specifically emphasized by the trailer, while more monster types are shown (think insectoid, demonic-looking, and… fungal). While it’s clear combat is a huge part of the Slitterhead draw, the trailer chooses to end on the possession by Hyoki of a canine. It’s not clear how significant that is, but it’s not completely expected!
The Slitterhead Story Trailer adds a little more grory flesh to the monstrous bones of previous trailers. The first 20 seconds are dedicated to a floating camera observing both populated and empty areas of Kowlong, as residents go about their days in heavily urban areas.
By the 30-second mark, we’ve seen at least two returning characters possibly what the game calls “rarities”, that Hyoki can possess, from previous trailers: the young person highlighted in the gameplay trailer and a motorbike-helmet-wearing character we’ve seen in fight sequences. Amid occasional blood-spattered scenes, we see threads of characters’ stories, including those of a hooded, mask-wearing character, and a martial artist.
Although nothing is clearly explained in this trailer, it’s clear Slitterhead offers a multi-threaded story, and a bunch of defined and unique personalities. Although no dog is featured in this trailer, we do see what appears to be Kowlong in flames, a psychologically tormented doctor, and the same young person highlighted in yellow ‘flames’ that appear to suggest possession.
The trailer ends with the bike helmet-wearing character showing first glowing red and then glowing blue eyes…

The latest horror game by Keiichiro Toyama, creator of Silent Hill
Slitterhead is a horror battle-action and adventure game developed by Bokeh Game Studio, founded by Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama. The title appears to have a multi-threaded and multi-character-driven story while following the entity Hyoki, a spirit seeking to vanquish the monstrous Slitterheads from “Kowlong”. Kowlong is inspired by Toyama’s interest in the former city, Kowloon Walled City, China.
The Bottom Line
Slitterhead looks to be a return to form for survival horror with Keiichiro Toyama directing after his pivot into the popular Gravity Rush games in the 2010s. Everything we’ve seen so far is promising and, hopefully, the game will deliver on its lofty ambitions when it releases next month.
