Google and Snapchat have partnered to bring generative AI features powered by Gemini to Snapchat’s chatbot, My AI.
Snapchat’s My AI chatbot, released last year, uses OpenAI’s GPT models, primarily allowing the chatbot to work with text. However, with Google Gemini now being integrated into My AI, the chatbot will be able to handle pictures and videos in addition to text, making it a multimodal AI.
This partnership might benefit Snapchat users, who primarily share photos and videos with the platform. My AI’s ability to work with images and videos can assist Snapchatters in various ways. For example, users can take a picture of a street sign in a foreign language and ask My AI to translate it into their native language, or they can record a video of different snacks and ask My AI to identify the healthiest option. The possibilities are endless.
Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel acknowledged that the company had been behind in integrating photo and video capabilities into their chatbot. The inability to process them through My AI had held back their vision because Snapchat revolves around sharing photos and videos.
Snapchat has invested heavily in AI technology to stay competitive with rivals like Meta. Recently, they announced plans to release Snap AI Video, allowing creators to generate videos from text.
