PlayStation’s Senior Principal Product Manager Toshi Aoki has defended the PS5 Pro’s price, citing its cutting-edge technology.
In an interview with IGN, Aoki attributed the cost to the console’s innovative technology, promising exceptional value for serious gamers.
According to Aoki, the development of the PS5 Pro began even before the original PS5 launched in 2020. He explained that the PS5 Pro was designed to harness technological advancements that weren’t available when the base PS5 was developed.
The new console boasts significant improvements, including a more powerful GPU and advanced AI upscaling feature known as PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). This technology enables developers to enhance game visuals without compromising performance, akin to Nvidia’s DLSS and AMD’s FSR, making it a pivotal selling point for the PS5 Pro.

While the PS5 Pro boasts major GPU upgrades, its CPU remains unchanged. This has sparked some concerns about potential limitations for demanding titles like Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2.
Addressing these potential issues, Aoki acknowledged that while the CPU is still the same, the PS5 Pro operates at a slightly faster clock speed, ensuring that the GPU remains the primary focus for improved gaming experiences.
Sony’s latest console, the PS5 Pro, is stirring up conversations due to its hefty price tag, which can reach up to $800 when adding the optional disc drive and vertical stand. This premium offering is the third-most expensive console in Sony’s lineup, especially compared to a refurbished all-digital PS5 Slim that costs just $350.
When asked about the justification for the price tag, Aoki emphasized the value offered through technological innovations, including a two-terabyte SSD and Wi-Fi 7 capabilities. He explained that these advancements collectively create an exceptional package targeted at the most engaged gamers.
