Sony has expanded its still-young LinkBuds lineup with two new sets of wireless earbuds and the launch of the first LinkBuds speaker.
Two years ago, Sony took a risk with a unique design for the original LinkBuds, which deliberately let in outside sound to help you stay aware of your surroundings. It’s a bet that appears to have paid off with the new releases.
The Japanese electronics multinational brought the LinkBuds to the market with an unusual appearance as the buds were completed with a donut-shaped speaker designed to allow all-day wear for the user. A few months later, Sony opted for a more traditional design with the LinkBuds S.
Now, the next generation has emerged. The new LinkBuds Fit replaces the LinkBuds S, while the new LinkBuds Open is the replacement for the original Sony LinkBuds.
The LinkBuds Fit and Open are both priced at $200/£179, while the newly launched LinkBuds Speaker will retail at $180/£139.
All three products are available to purchase now and will ship throughout October.
What Is New With the Sony LinkBuds Fit?
On the LinkBuds Fit, Sony has opted for a revamped design based on concerns about the fit and comfort of the previous edition. The new buds are smaller all around, making use of “extensive ear shape data” as well as a new ear tip for added comfort.
Under the hood, Dynamic Driver X is responsible for the audio, powered by the WF-1000XM5’s Integrated Processor V2 Chip. It also contributes to the active noise cancellation (ANC) feature.
Compared to its legacy device, the LinkBuds Fit has a shorter battery life at five and a half hours, or about 30 minutes less sound time.
The LinkBuds Fit are available in black, white, green, and a Olivia Rodrigo-inspired purple for American buyers. Users will have a range of customization options with case covers ($20) and additional fitting supporters ($10) for an increased personal touch.
What features does the Sony LinkBuds Open Have?
The Sony LinkBuds Open edition has been tweaked from the design of the original headphones to provide more comfort. The product offers a new “fitting supporter” to provide a more familiar wing-fit shape.
Again, these headphones have been reduced in size for a better fit, while Sony claims the upgraded set can “better replicate clear highs and mids along with louder, richer bass.”
You’ll find the Integrated Processor V2 chip inside, with the LinkBuds Open offering up to eight hours playback and a quick charge feature can provide an hour of use with three minutes of power.
The Sony LinkBuds Open are available in black and white, with US consumers having another option in purple. The additional case covers and fitting supporters for personalization are also up for grabs with these buds.
What Is The Sony LinkBuds Speaker?
The Sony LinkBuds Speaker is a compact, portable device with an IPX4 rating and an attached loop for hanging. It’s a direct competitor to speakers like Ultimate Ears’ Boom series.
It will provide up to 25 hours of battery life, complete with a separate charging base.
Notably, you can switch between the LinkBuds headphones and the speaker when one or the other is activated, or when you return home, thanks to the auto-switching feature. That’s rare in the industry, and might help if you always want the music to continue.
You can also deploy the Sound Connect app to have pre-set routines and commands for the speaker at certain times of the day.
The Sony LinkBuds Speaker is available in black and grey, but it’s only shipping in the US for now.
