Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 has sold over 59 million units, with 4.5 million units sold in the final quarter of FY 2023.
This milestone highlights the console’s continued popularity and strong performance in a competitive market. The lifetime sales figures also show Sony’s effective handling of earlier supply chain issues, which had caused widespread shortages.
The fiscal year 2023 saw the PlayStation 5 achieve its highest annual sales yet, with 20.8 million first-party titles sold.
Despite a slight dip in PS4 sales for Q4 sales compared to the previous year’s final quarter, Sony’s broader financial performance paints a promising picture. The company’s Game & Network Services segment, which includes PlayStation hardware and software sales, reported significant revenues.
The continuous growth in PlayStation Network’s monthly active users and the robust sales of hardware and digital content also contributed to these impressive figures. This growth indicates the increasing shift towards digital gaming and the rising importance of network services in the gaming ecosystem.
As the PlayStation 5 nears the midpoint of its expected lifecycle, speculation about a potential mid-cycle upgrade, akin to the PlayStation 4 Pro, is rife. Such a release could rejuvenate sales and keep the console competitive as technological advancements continue rapidly.
The results come only a couple of days after Square Enix shared its financial results for 2023, as well as a new business strategy and expanded major franchises to multiple platforms, including Nintendo.
Meanwhile, Sony is struggling with porting Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut to PC, with Steam starting issuing automatic refunds to players who pre-ordered the game in countries where the PlayStation Network (PSN) is inaccessible.
