Spotify will now reportedly support Google’s Gemini Extensions. This essentially allows users to search and play the music of their choice via natural language requests by making use of Google’s generative AI assistant.
Initially uncovered in Google app code earlier this year, the feature is now being rolled out to compatible Android devices, according to a report by 9to5Google. Following WhatsApp’s adoption in October, Spotify is now the second non-Google app to integrate Gemini into its ecosystem.
Features and Limitations
With Gemini, users can play songs by mentioning titles, artist names, album names, playlists, or even activities. However, the extension does not currently support creating playlists or radio stations on Spotify. Users with multiple linked music services, such as YouTube Music, must specify Spotify in their request initially, after which Gemini defaults to the last-used service.
Setup Requirements
To use the feature, users need to link their Spotify and Google accounts and enable Gemini Apps Activity, which retains AI queries for up to 72 hours. The feature is limited to Android devices and requires Gemini’s language to be set to English. It is not supported in Google Messages, the Gemini web app, or the Gemini app on iOS.
