Tesla has recalled more than 11,000 Cybertrucks over two separate issues relating to the EV’s trim and windshield wiper motor.
The first recall, which concerns all 11,383 Cybertrucks built since May 26th, 2024, relates to the “sail applique,” a cosmetic applique that sticks to the exterior of the trunk bed trim with adhesive. On affected vehicles, Tesla says the sail applique may not have been installed “according to specification” and could become loose or separate from the truck, potentially causing a hazard to other drivers.
According to a notice filed with the NHTSA, Tesla has promised to “replace or rework” the affected part at no cost to customers.
Last week, Tesla delayed Cybertruck deliveries following comments spotted in owner forums relating to an issue with the windshield wiper motor. All 11,688 trucks built since June 6th, 2024 are now being recalled.
Tesla said the front windshield wiper motor controller may stop functioning due to “electrical overstress” to the gate driver component. This could result in reduced visibility for the driver in wet conditions, potentially causing a collision.
In the associated NHTSA notice, Tesla promised to replace the motor free of charge on affected trucks.
This isn’t the first issue with Tesla’s Cybertruck since it launched on November 30th, 2023. The company halted Cybertruck deliveries in early April over suspected issues with the accelerator pedal. On April 12th, Tesla confirmed it was recalling all Cybertrucks made up to that date, 3,878 vehicles, due to faulty accelerator pedals. Soap had accidentally been introduced into the assembly of accelerator pedal pads, increasing the risk the pad could come loose and cause vehicles to accelerate “unintentionally,” resulting in a collision.
