Tesla is set to reveal its long-awaited robotaxi at a showcase event at Warner Bros. movie studio near Los Angeles.
Bloomberg has cited sources close to developments, with an anticipated launch event on October 10, at the site in Burbank, California.
Tesla delayed its robotaxi event, originally scheduled for August 8, due to an “important design change,” as confirmed by Elon Musk on X.
There is very little known about the robotaxi beyond the premise of fully autonomous driving, while Musk previously mooted a resemblance to the Cybertruck. The mystery and intrigue continue with a veil of secrecy surrounding the landmark event for the EV maker.
Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.’s renowned studios have been the base from which many blockbuster productions have made a cultural impact, and Tesla and Musk will be seeking a breakthrough of their own.
The company is scaling up autonomy and AI to diversify from the core business of selling EVs to customers as the sector evolves. Last week, General Motors’ autonomous vehicle subsidiary Cruise announced a multi-year partnership with Uber. At the same time, Waymo released details of its “Generation 6” autonomous driving system to be deployed in Zeekr EVs.
Robotaxi Still Needs To Prove Its Reliability
There are still obstacles on the road leading to true autonomous driving, as Tesla knows too well.
Its existing Full Self-Driving system (now labeled with a “Supervised” tag) still can’t drive entirely on its own, with critics and regulators accusing the company of misleading buyers about its capabilities.
A robotaxi would be required to handle every stage of a journey reliably enough that human occupants wouldn’t have to be ready to intervene; that needs to be proven.
Tesla chief Musk did not respond to requests for comment on the upcoming robotaxi event.
