Tesla is testing whether its current Supercharging V4 has the potential to charge at over 300kW, according to a post on X by the company’s lead engineer, Wes Morrill.

Tesla’s Supercharger V3 was limited to top speeds of 250kW, and though the company is now on the Supercharger V4, it’s still using V3 cabinets for power alongside new changing stalls in stations called “Supercharger V3+”, capping the top speeds. 

There’s no doubt that the V4 is capable of 350kW charging, but that would require the automaker to introduce new V4 cabinets.

Tesla’s Supercharger Network Can’t Compete on Speed

With the most extensive and reliable fast-charging network on the planet, the only thing Tesla really has to worry about is its top charging speeds compared to the competition. To date, the automaker has around 60,000 supercharging stations at over 6,000 locations worldwide.

Now it has opened its charging networks to EVs from other manufacturers such as Hyundai/Kia and Porsche, many of which can charge at up to 400kW, Tesla needs to play catch up with other charging stations already capable of this rate.

Back in 2016, Musk made some typically grandiose comments to Electrek on X when asked whether the new Supercharger V3 would be capable of 350kW charging, saying that a “mere” 350kW would be a “children’s toy.”

Though Morrill’s post didn’t mention what will happen next if these tests are successful, Tesla’s stations may soon be capable of reaching or exceeding the rate Musk dismissed as a joke eight years ago, which could be excellent news as NACS becomes more commonplace.
