Meta announced its Meta Quest HDMI Link for Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro, now available to download from App Lab.
The app allows Meta Quest users to display 2D content in VR on a vast virtual display with low lag. Headset wearers can output games and other content at 1080p on a screen they can resize and reposition.
With HDMI Link Meta Quest headsets can be connected to handheld PCs or consoles, laptops, phones, and more.
The add-on is theoretically ideal for traveling or anywhere with spotty or missing Wi-Fi connections. HDMI Link is billed as easy to set up for gaming, work, or watching already-owned movies and shows. Meta Quest headsets already have Air Link, which lets users wirelessly stream content from their PC to the headset, but reliable Wi-Fi is a must for this.
Some extra third party hardware is needed to get started with HDMI Link, including a UVC and UAC compatible capture card and associated cables. Meta recommends USB 3.0.
How to Set Up Meta Quest HDMI Link
- Install Meta Quest HDMI Link on your headset.
- Connect your source device to your capture card using an HDMI cable, USB-C to HDMI cable, or Lightning to HDMI cable as appropriate.
- It’s optional to run USB-C power to your capture card, keeping the headset’s battery topped up while in use.
- Connect your headset to the capture card using a USB-A to USB-C male cable.
- Turn on your Meta Quest headset and grant the necessary permissions.
It’s worth noting that though it sounds pretty great, HDMI Link isn’t the perfect solution for streaming. It may not be compatible with some apps, including streaming apps that use built-in copy protection. Capture cards also won’t display video if the HDMI signal has HDCP protection enabled.
