A horror classic is reborn as The Thing: Remastered’s first trailer gives a glimpse at the frozen frights coming later this year.
John Carpenter’s The Thing is a true horror classic, with its tense guessing-game atmosphere ramped up by a bleak arctic setting and memorable, explosive practical effects.
While The Thing never received a true cinematic sequel, PC, PS2, and Xbox players in 2002 were treated to a playable follow-up that married squad-based shooting to a unique trust/fear mechanic that successfully recreates the film characters’ increasing paranoia.
The first trailer for The Thing: Remastered shows that the core experience has been kept intact, along with a fresh coat of paint by Nightdive Studios, sharpening up the textures as well as the scares.
With all manner of low-budget movie tie-ins rushed out the door in the late 90s and early 2000s, longtime gamers would be forgiven for writing off 2002’s The Thing as another cash-grab.
However, this game set itself apart from the pack in a number of key ways. For one, it was adapting a property 20 years after its cinema release, and for another, it served as a true continuation of the movie’s events, not a simple retelling.
As a result, The Thing was reasonably well received by critics and players in 2002 and has only grown in popularity in the years since.
Now, this 2024 remaster will introduce the title to a whole new crowd of film and game buffs, and give its supporters an updated look at an old favorite.
