Instagram head Adam Mosseri has revealed that Threads now has over 275 million monthly active users, making it popular but still well behind Elon Musk’s X.
The milestone comes just three months after Threads reached 200 million users. That’s rapid growth for a service that reached 100 million participants in its first few days, but took roughly a year to top 175 million.
Mosseri didn’t attribute the growth to any particular factor. However, Threads’ rise has typically been attributed to a combination of dissatisfaction with X’s increasing tolerance for hate and misinformation as well as Meta’s aggressive pushes for user adoption through Facebook and Instagram.
The tally isn’t anywhere close to X’s reported numbers. Musk claimed his service had about 600 million active users as of April 2024, or a sharp climb from the 368.4 million from the Twitter-era peak in 2022.
However, it also suggests the gap is closing and that Threads’ initially stalled momentum has resumed.
The challenge, of course, is maintaining interest. Threads still has some common complaints, including a relative lack of engagement and a concern that it’s not cracking down on threats as authoritatively as it should.
However, X just sparked a backlash after acting on a promise to let blocked users view public posts. Some users are concerned that this helps stalkers and other abusers follow the activity of their targets. This could spur some users to leave out of safety concerns, or simply out of opposition to a social media platform that could enact such a policy.
