Streaming platform Twitch has reinstated former president Donald Trump’s account ahead of the 2024 presidential election, three years after it was indefinitely banned.
Trump’s Twitch account, originally created in 2019, was used to stream rallies and campaign events. The account was first temporarily suspended in June 2020 for broadcasting what Twitch described as “hateful conduct.”
The Amazon-owned live-streaming platform then indefinitely suspended Trump’s account following the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. At that time, Twitch cited Trump’s “incendiary rhetoric” and the need to prevent the platform from being used to incite further violence.
Twitch’s decision to lift the ban comes after Trump formally accepted the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential election last week. In a statement provided to PC Gamer, Twitch said there is value in hearing from presidential nominees directly when possible.
The platform also emphasized that its community guidelines remain in full effect and that all users, regardless of public figure status, are subject to these rules.
The reinstatement aligns with actions taken by other major social media companies. Recently, Meta also lifted the heightened suspension penalties on Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, asserting the importance of equal footing for all presidential nominees. Similarly, YouTube reinstated Trump’s account last year, and X (formerly Twitter) did so in 2022 under Elon Musk’s leadership.
Since the ban was lifted, a single video has been uploaded to Trump’s Twitch account, which currently has 143,000 followers. The banner image has also been updated to feature a 2024 rally photo.
The video on Trump’s Twitch channel is from his first campaign rally since surviving an attempted assassination. Trump appeared two days ago alongside his new running mate, Senator JD Vance, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The livestream had a total of 30,233 views.
The reinstatement of Trump’s Twitch account comes days after Elon Musk committed a monthly contribution of $45 million to a newly formed pro-Trump super PAC.
