Uber is releasing Enhanced Rider Verification in the US tomorrow, September 18th, in hopes of improving driver safety.
Enhanced Rider Verification was developed in response to Uber drivers’ feedback that they want more information about riders before accepting their trips. Drivers will now see a new “Verified” rider badge when a rider who has completed the verification process requests a ride.
Uber will verify riders by cross-checking their account information against third-party databases. Riders will also have the option to upload an official ID to get their account verified. Additionally, users who are existing CLEAR members can get their accounts verified on Uber by linking their verification status from the CLEAR program.
In addition to the Rider Verification system, Uber is rolling out a couple of other initiatives for drivers. The “Record My Ride” initiative gives drivers the option to use the front-facing camera of their smartphone to record video and audio during trips, eliminating the need for a dashcam. These recordings will remain with the drivers unless they choose to submit them to Uber for review.
Other features Uber is introducing with driver safety in mind include a PIN verification system, which will assure drivers they are picking up the correct rider. Riders will need to provide the PIN to confirm their identity. Additionally, drivers with iOS devices can use Siri to customize voice-activated shortcuts in the Uber app without touching their device.
While these changes will go into effect for all Uber drivers starting tomorrow, the company is also piloting an option for drivers to block riders. If a rider rates a trip two or three stars, the driver will have the option to block that rider.
