If you’ve ever seen a horror film, you’ll know that, beyond anything else, staying at a remote lodge in any kind of fictional content is a bad idea – especially revisiting the scene of a tragedy. Until Dawn is a 2015 Supermassive Games title that does well with the setting, but should it be remastered or rebuilt? Ballistic Moon thinks yes.
The most interesting thing is not that the Until Dawn remake is on the way though. It’s that it is a remake rather than a regular remaster. There is a difference, and it looks worth the effort. Let’s shine a light on this new slasher-inspired iteration, starting with the Until Dawn remake release date.
Until Dawn Remake Release Date
The Until Dawn remake’s release date is Friday, October 4, 2024. The date is nine and a bit years after the original 2015 release of the title to the PlayStation 4. And it’s safe to say that in that time, technology has moved on enough for there to be good reason to re-build the title.
With a return to the setting of Blackwood Mountain, and the potential horrors thereon, there will be the same Until Dawn characters – and at least two familiar names. Peter Stormare, who voiced Dr. Hill in the original game, will do so again. Stormare will also play a role in the in-the-works Sony movie based on the game.
Also returning in voice for the Until Dawn remake cast (per IMDB) is Meaghan Martin, who voiced Jessica in the original title.
Until Dawn Remake Pre-orders
Until Dawn pre-orders, or at least pre-purchases, are available ahead of launch, and you can pick those up now. Game pages are available on Steam for PC and the official PlayStation Store.
However, there appear to be no Until Dawn pre-order bonuses or varied editions available for either the Windows PC or PlayStation 5 versions.
This makes sense, as the title is a straight rebuild and remake without extra bells or whistles beyond the seemingly excellent job Supermassive has done. The Until Dawn remake looks to revisit and enhance a title originally slated for PS3, with the studio upping the atmosphere, improving locations, and doubling down on the chills.
If you’re not yet sure whether to pick up the title, we’d recommend waiting for the reviews to arrive. There’s no guarantee that Until Dawn will be considered one of the best horror games in {cur_year], but that doesn’t mean it won’t be worth your time.
Until Dawn Remake Price
The Until Dawn remake price will be the same for PlayStation 5 and Windows PCs, at $59.99. That is a premium price, which hopefully reflects the extra effort Supermassive has put into providing an even more engaging experience.
For example, one criticism of the 2015 title was it was often quite…dark. Not atmospherically, but in a “more light, please” way. The fact that the title appears a complete rebuild rather than a ‘typical’ remaster, and is released to two completely new platforms, hopefully offers enough to justify the price.
Until Dawn Remake Platforms
The Until Dawn Remake platform list clearly excludes the PlayStation 4. While the original 2015 release was intended for the PS3, it made its debut on the PS4 and the PS4 alone. However, the new title won’t be available on the older-generation console.
The lack of a return to its original platform is likely due to the enhanced performance requirements, and the focus of opening the title’s story to newer audiences. That said, the Until Dawn remake won’t be released on any Xbox platform either, as the officially announced platforms are just the PS5 and Windows PCs.
Until Dawn Remake Trailers
There are four Until Dawn remake trailers, each under two minutes long and offering some insight into Ballistic Moon’s work on the upcoming title.
The first of these is the Until Dawn – Announce Trailer for PS5 and PC. Published on January 31, 2024, the trailer shows game footage marked as “captured on PS5” and reintroduces the setting of Blackwood Mountain.
The trailer reintroduces the spooky setting and some snapshots of inside areas while slowly ratcheting up the fright factor as Dr. Hill speaks over shots of a seemingly deserted cabin, with interspersed pleads and anguished voices. As the trailer goes on, returning faces of the original game’s characters, terrified expressions, and the game’s masked figure emerge. For new fans, there’s some hidden context in here, too.
It’s clear from this trailer that the title is being developed by Ballistic Moon (formed of former Supermassive employees), and that this remake is PS5 and PC exclusive. It’s also clear that a familiar, but hopefully enhanced experience is on the way!
Until Dawn’s Gameplay / State of Play trailer was released on May 30, 2024, and is split in half. The early trailer focuses on the beauty, relaxation, and joy to be had by the eight characters in the annual Blackwood getaway. That doesn’t last, of course.
At approximately the halfway mark a stunningly unnerving and dark cover of Eagle-Eye Cherry’s pop hit Save Tonight overlays the same characters investigating dark and terrifying areas of the region, flicking flashlights and holding firearms as tensions and terror mounts.
We see suggestions of Until Dawn gameplay characters abducted, held prisoner, seemingly tortured, and hear talk of heavy decisions and potential death. A single scene at the end of the trailer hints at something far darker going on – and it may be related to the history of the annual getaway. It’s certainly intriguing and offers enough for us to add the title to our list of best upcoming horror games.
The Until Dawn Remake Comparison Trailer (PS5 & PC) offers a mix of in-game and cinematic footage captured on the PS5. It kicks off with a quick look at the drama and terror of the game with the titles “Return To Blackwood Mountain”, and “For the Night Of Your Death”.
Here we see also the note “Rebuilt And Enhanced For PS5 & PC” before we’re shown side-by-side characters in cinematic sequences. The trailer notes the visuals have been overhauled and rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, and it’s clear the lighting and textures of the game are at a whole new level.
Until Dawn has also undergone a revision of its cinematography and production design, which we can see from new perspectives on returning scenes – such as the Ouija board cinematic. Not only this, there’s been a prologue rework and new motion capture as well as new music and audio design across the title.
As the trailer progresses, we see each of these in action. Inside and outside locations look far more realistic and absorbing, visuals appear more cinematic across the trailer, and although the overall quality of the title seems to have been bumped by each of these improvements. Hopefully, this translates to the experience.
The fourth trailer, released September 12, 2024, lists the features available during the title. Although it does little extra to progress what’s known about the title’s technical or plot elements, we’re shown that Until Dawn Remake will offer full DualSense controller support for PS5.
The game will also support upscaling with Nvidia’s DLSS 3 and AMD FSR 3 through compatible PC graphics cards, ray tracing support, ultra-wide aspect ratio, and an unlocked frame rate.
Each of those features will undoubtedly increase the quality and enjoyment of the game, even if we’d hope for the inclusion of most of them for a rebuilt version of a title costing $59.99.
Latest Until Dawn Remake News
The latest Until Dawn news is that the remake releases on October 4, 2024, on both PS5 and Windows PCs. A rebuilt and overhauled return to the 2015 PS4 title, the game is being delivered by Ballistic Moon, formed of former Supermassive Games employees – the studio that delivered the original title.
The remake has been a complete rebuild in the Unreal 5 engine and offers technical, gameplay, and feature enhancements. It will also see Peter Stormare (voicing Dr.Hill) and Meaghan Martin (voicing Jessica) return, and the game is available for pre-order via for both PS5 and PC systems.
The run-up to the release has been marked by redundancies at Ballistic Moon, confirmed by the studio, citing “complex challenges” and “difficult realities” in the games industry and “the tough decision to significantly scale down our team to secure the future of our studio. This comes after our development of Until Dawn for PS5 and PC (via GamesHub).”
Until Dawn System Requirements
Until Dawn’s System requirements for the PC version are now available and are listed on the game’s Steam page. The requirements are fairly modest, allowing for those running older PCs to play the new title. What is Until Dawn Remake?
A ground-up remake of the 2015 interactive horror experience
The Until Dawn Remake is a completely overhauled revisiting of the 2015 PS4 game of the same name. Following the same plat with the same characters, and the same horror-survival gameplay, it has been built in a new engine, offering new features for PS5 and PC systems, as well as a slew of technical, audio, and production enhancements.
The Bottom Line
The Until Dawn remake will release in early October, and we’re keen to see how much better, immersive, and chilling the title may be, some nine years after launch. The original was generally well received, and we look forward to seeing if the plot and gameplay style of the original can stand on the shoulders of the achievements delivered by a complete rebuild.
