After years on PC, Riot Games’ Valorant is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in a limited beta on June 14th.
The free-to-play hero shooter requires a sign-up to play early. and will only be playable in Canada, Europe, Japan, the UK, and the US. You also won’t match up against PC players to prevent mismatched competitions, although your progress and inventory will carry over.
This isn’t just a plain port, according to Riot. Valorant will include optimized gameplay for PS5 and Xbox players to accommodate gamepad players. The developers also promised updates at the same time as on PC, ensuring that you’ll get the same characters, maps, and other extras.
Valorant was first released in 2020. Its core gameplay is reminiscent of Counter-Strike and involves one team trying to plant a Spike (effectively, a bomb) while the other prevents it. Each side is a mix of heroes with unique abilities, and teams usually win by developing strategies that harmonize those skills. While reflexes help, they’re rarely enough.
The game has enjoyed sustained popularity and become a staple of esports tournaments. It hasn’t been available on consoles until now, though, and the impending release should expand its reach that much further.
