Vivo has announced it has begun rolling out Funtouch OS 15 based on Android 15 before Google’s formal confirmation for the update on Pixel devices.

Android 15 has yet to roll out, but OEMs are already jumping on the bandwagon and giving us glimpses of their adaptations of the operating system’s upcoming version. But vivo is taking it a step further, and has already announced the stable version of its custom skin, Funtouch OS 15, based on Android 15.

Funtouch OS 15 is set to begin rolling out globally sometime in mid-October to Vivo’s flagship devices, including the vivo X Fold 3 Pro, the vivo X100, and the X100 Pro. Alongside vivo, its economical sub-brand iQoo will also get the update, with the flagship killer iQoo 12 included in the first batch of rollouts alongside the premium vivo phones.

Notably, vivo is also set to launch the X200 series in China on October 14, and it may come with Android 15 out of the box. However, Chinese units from the phone run an entirely different interface called OriginOS. Despite the differences, it wouldn’t be excessive to expect the X200 series to run Android 15 when it launches globally later this year or early next year.

The Funtouch OS 15 update is currently available in an open beta, and we were able to download and install it on the X Fold 3 Pro. Though there aren’t many visual distinctions from the previous version based on Android 14, the update brings a host of optimizations, performance improvements, and some AI features.

What’s New in Funtouch OS 15?

Visually, the most significant change in Funtouch OS 15 is the new set of icons that now feel more 3D. For flagships, vivo also adds new static and 3D live wallpapers, while the animations are more fluid. The interface is also rumored to get Google’s Circle to Search by year-end.

The OS gets new photo and video editing tools, including the ability to annotate screen recordings for better context. The AI erase tool helps clear up distractions from backgrounds to help focus on the main subject in images, simply by circling what you don’t want in the image. The Photos app can also identify frequent faces of people and pets and sort them individually. An AI enhancement feature is tuned to finely edit images with a single tap.

For gaming, Funtouch OS 15 gets a revamped “Ultra Game Mode” that, according to vivo, lets you configure things such as the display’s refresh rate and the touch sampling rate while within a game.

When Will Funtouch OS 15 be Available on Your Phone?

In addition to rolling out a beta test for the vivo X Fold 3 Pro and the X100 series, the company has also announced a tentative timeline for release for the open beta versions of Funtouch OS 15.

Stable updates should be available a few weeks following the beta release. Apart from the Fold 3 Pro and the X100 series, most of the releases are set for 2025, and the only devices to get the updates this year are ones launched either in 2024 or 2023.

Similarly, the rollout schedule for sub-brand iQoo has also been announced.
