Where Winds Meet has been in development for five years, but it only caught mainstream attention when it was featured in the PlayStation State of Play presentation.
The open-world RPG with beautiful visuals and combat was enough to get my attention, but it wasn’t until I dug deeper that Where Winds Meet fully brought me on-board.
If you’re also intrigued by this new title, let me sell you on it better than the trailer did.
What is Where Winds Meet?
Open-World, Action-Adventure RPG, Historical Setting
The announcement trailer from State of Play sets up the basic premise on which Where Winds Meet is built. It is a Chinese-inspired action game with blazing-fast combat and mythically massive bosses.
However, it’s all the details I found outside of the trailer that set this game apart.
Set during the period known as the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, your character will be on a quest to discover their own identity amongst the chaos of this era.
Where Winds Meet is described as a Wuxia (Chinese fiction based around the adventures of martial artists) open-world title.
Producer Beralt Lyu defines Wuxia a “genre of fiction and cinema featuring warriors from ancient China often shown using superhuman martial arts feats – think Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon or House of The Flying Daggers.”
The fantasy RPG will bring larger to life battles to the fore.
You will be able to determine which disciplines your character masters, such as Qinggong for talents such as running on water, Accupoint Hit to freeze enemies, or Chi to stun foes from a distance.
A unique element is the ability to learn new martial arts skills by observing animals.
Beralt Lyu added:
“Breath fire like a dragon, leap like a giant toad or roar like a lion – all skills that can prove incredibly useful when faced with an array of foes, whether human or maybe with that giant bear you accidentally provoked!”
The last crucial element not shown is that the Where Winds Meet game is fully open-world. The team promises a variety of regions to explore and unique NPCs to meet and learn from.
When Does Where Winds Meet Come Out?
Status: In Development
Despite being worked on for five years, Where Winds Meet does not yet have a release date.
Since we don’t even have a year window to speculate on, I can’t give you any reasonable guess as to when the game will launch.
There was a Where Winds Meet beta test in April 2024 so we hope it isn’t more than a year away — but take that with a huge grain of salt.
What Consoles/Platforms Will Where Winds Meet be Available for?
Confirmed for PS5 and PC
Where Winds Meet was announced as a PC title, however, we now know it will also be coming to PlayStation 5.
There is a possibility an Xbox version will also be revealed later, but for now, assume Where Winds Meet will only be on PC and PS5.
Where Winds Meet Trailers
Where Winds Meet made its debut at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event in 2022 with the reveal trailer. This CGI trailer is more of a tone-setter than anything else. We see the historic Chinese setting and cryptic shots of a few characters before it cuts to some gameplay.
Our character traverses various environments until we get a scene of them attacking a boat. Opening with a bow, they then sprint across the water to get an angle to ignite some explosive barrels.
The rest of the trailer focuses on one-on-one fights and a bit more mysterious imagery.
The Announce Trailer for PS5 (as seen above) is all about action. Both Where Winds Meet’s gameplay and CGI showcase the tense, fast-paced duels this game promises.
Why Fans Are Excited for Where Winds Meet
Where Winds Meet came out of nowhere for most people and could be the next Sekiro-like experience. Most of the game’s hype is built upon the footage of two characters clashing swords, dodging, and unleashing mystic spells.
Others are being sold simply on the spectacle of it all. Seeing characters fight while defying gravity on the treetops and the surface of bodies of water is cool enough on its own to get people interested.
We also know that Where Winds Meet will feature multiplayer options. Players can play alongside four friends and engage in a range of player-versus-player battles, on PS5 and on PC.
A small subset, such as myself, can’t wait to see how the Chinese influences and mechanics of learning moves from animals will work. Once those features are highlighted more, I believe Where Winds Meet will get even more people excited.
Where Winds Meet Price
Expect $70 on PS5, $60 on PC
Just like Where Winds Meet has no release date, it also has no price listed. That said, $70 has become the standard PS5 game price, while PC games still stick to $60. I would say that assuming those price points is safe.
The Bottom Line
Where Winds Meet looks to meld the combat of a Sekrio title in an open-world inspired by Wuxia and Chinese history.
The visuals already look stunning, and the snippets of gameplay has fans itching to test their skills and see how it feels in action.
Without a release date, I expect we will see much more of Where Winds Meet before it eventually comes to PS5 and PC
