  • Microsoft is actively investigating the root cause of this issue.
  • There was initial speculation that the Checkpoint Cumulative Update (CCU) method might be responsible.

Microsoft has confirmed that the 8.63 GB of undeletable update cache data users see in the Windows 11 24H2 update is simply a reporting bug.

According to the company, when users clean up Windows Update Cleanup, Windows indeed removes the files and frees up the associated disk space as expected. However, due to a reporting bug, the cleanup tool inaccurately shows that the space is still available for cleanup under the Windows Update Cleanup category even after the space has been cleared.

Microsoft is currently investigating the root cause of the bug and plans to release a fix soon once identified.

Before Microsoft’s statement, it was speculated that the new Checkpoint Cumulative Update (CCU) method might be why users couldn’t delete the Windows update cache data. This method, introduced with Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025, allows users to receive features and security enhancements through smaller, incremental updates containing only the changes since the previous checkpoint.

This approach is designed to save bandwidth and hard drive space. As a result, some thought it caused the undeletable 8.63 GB cache data.
