After 15 long and painful years, the goopy and slippery World of Goo 2 is finally just a short, stretchy bridge away.
World of Goo was an adorable and atmospheric little puzzler where the mysterious Sign Painter guided you to make bridges and other structures out of living, curious goo balls.
It was a breakout hit across pretty much all platforms, and scooping all of the awards, before the goo balls escaped the atmosphere of the World of Goo Corporation, never to be heard from again. Until now.
The new entry, developed by original developers 2D Boy in collaboration with Tomorrow Corporation, is nearly here and promises new puzzles, new types of Goo balls to play with, and a whole new adventure for our Goo friends after the events of the first game.
Just as importantly, the trailer shows that the look, feel, humor, and music are all intact.
I’ve built the most stable bridge possible to guide all you Goo balls to the World of Goo 2 — and, update: the game is now available! Get your World of Goo on at worldofgoo2.com.
What is World of Goo 2?
Charming Physics-based Puzzler
World of Goo 2 is a physics-based puzzle game where you need to build and manipulate Goo to reach a goal in different stages. You will mainly be building bridges over and around obstacles to connect to an exit pipe, but the sequel will bring in plenty of new mechanics as well.
The game will be broken up into several chapters that have different themes and multiple levels within those chapters.
Normal Goo balls will connect based on where you position them relative to the others and react naturally to physics. You need to connect the Goo from the starting position to the pipe using as few Goo balls as possible — and letting as many as possible escape.
Different colored Goo balls react differently, and the player has a whistle and balloons at your disposal. World of Goo 2 will introduce new types of Goo balls, like lava and flowing oozy goo.
This is just one of the big changes the team was excited about implementing, thanks to new technology.
From World of Goo’s designer, writer, artist composer, Kyle Gabler:
“World of Goo had Goo Balls, and it had roughly simulated regions of water
“But there was no flowing gloopy oozy goo. Computers are much faster now, so we’re able to create actual flowing, splashing, simulated goo.”
When is World of Goo 2 Coming Out?
Release Date: August 2, 2024
World of Goo 2 launched on August 2, 2024. It was originally slated to release in May, but the launch date got “enhanced” and moved to August 2.
What Consoles/Platforms Will World of Goo 2 be Available for?
Switch and PC Exclusive (For Now)
When World of Goo 2 launches,, it will only be available on Switch and PC, via Epic Games or the official site.
There is no direct mention of future platforms it will come to, but the official site’s FAQ does have some helpful information.
“Don’t see your favorite platform listed? Don’t worry. Throw your other platforms in the trash, and get it from one of the above!”
Answering the question of what platforms it will be on later:
“Dandy Wheeler, PR specialist: Yes, let’s enjoy this moment, right now, where anything is possible. Can you play it on your 2004 Discman? Maybe. Let’s just let the vast expanse of uncertainty fill our hearts with wonder while we fill our bank accounts with exclusive distribution contracts.”
Clearly, the team is having fun with these answers, though it seems as though whatever exclusivity deals were made prevents Tomorrow Corporation from even hinting at when or where it could appear later.
World of Goo 2 Trailers
The first, and so far only, official trailer for World of Goo 2 came out in December of 2023.
It begins with a little meta-narrative of two kids playing the original game wishing a sequel had been made before the earth starts shaking.
The trailer is mostly a montage of gameplay involving the standard Goo bridge building, directing liquid Goo, and some new mechanics like terreforming the levels itself.
Why Fans Are Excited
World of Goo was more than just a great puzzle game when it came out; but packed in a surprisingly interesting story and appealing cartoon graphics. It appealed to a huge audience thanks to being so easy to pick up and addictive.
Purple was a rare color scheme in the original — here’s to new strange lands in World of Goo 2. (2D Boy)
As great as it was, there was never any sign of a sequel, although it kept finding new life across PC, mobile, and even platforms like Netflix.
After over 15 years, most fans had given up hope of revisiting the World of Goo, which made the announcement a pleasant surprise.
While there have been plenty of great puzzle games since, none of them scratched that same itch of placing Goo balls in just the right place to form a rickety little structure that interacts just right to clear that stage’s puzzle.
The addition of real liquid Goo, plus new colored Goo types to experiment with, and a story that isn’t afraid to take jabs at things the team has issues with in the real world.
“”We have so many beefs,” says Gabler. “I have to say, though, as a game designer I wish I could design something so clever as capitalism. It’s the reason cool stuff gets built cheaper over time. If no one bought stuff, we wouldn’t be able to get better and faster stuff all the time. And I love stuff!”
Fans should also put all their hopes on this sequel because it likely will be the only one we get.
“This is Cher’s farewell tour. I’m hoping we wring out all possible ideas into this game so we can’t possibly ever make another one,” Gaber stated.

The Bottom Line
Only once we all stopped waiting for it did World of Goo 2 finally become a reality. One of the original indie darlings, World of Goo played a big role in introducing the wider gaming world to the more off-beat type of game we see so much of today.
The puzzles will be trickier, the art bolder and more expressive, and the Goo…Gooier.
