Microsoft has warned that the Xbox Avatar Editor app will no longer be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows starting January 9th, 2025.
The company claimed this decision was made due to very low engagement with the app. Microsoft further maintained that discontinuing the app will allow the Xbox team to focus on more important player experiences.
It’s important to note the distinction between the Xbox Original Avatars app and the Xbox Avatar Editor app. Microsoft is shutting down the Xbox Avatar Editor app, which was introduced in 2018 during the Xbox One era. However, the Xbox Original Avatars app, launched in 2008 on the Xbox 360, will continue to function on Xbox consoles and PC. Players will still get to customize dynamic backgrounds and apply different profile colors, profile themes, and gamer pics using the earlier tool.
After the shutdown, any avatars created with the Xbox Avatar Editor app and items purchased for those avatars will no longer be accessible. Microsoft has also announced that any purchases made for avatars through the app since November 1st, 2023, will be refunded once the app is officially discontinued.
