YouTube is introducing a new parental supervision feature that lets parents connect their YouTube accounts to their teenagers’ accounts.
The feature is being introduced this week with the intention of allowing parents to be aware of their teens’ activity on YouTube. This will also ensure that teens feel more secure on the platform, knowing their parents are watching out for trolls and other inappropriate behaviors.
To use the feature, parents and teens will need to link their accounts within YouTube’s Family Center. Once that is done, parents will be able to see all their teens’ activities on YouTube, including information related to subscriptions, comments, and the total number of video uploads. The best part is that it will even work for unlisted or private videos.
Both parents and teens will receive a notification from YouTube for activity, such as when the teen uploads a new video, gets a comment on an uploaded video, or starts a live stream. This will allow parents to offer advice to their teens if necessary.
The good thing is that linking the parents’ account with the teens’ account will not affect the content shown to the teen, meaning the YouTube algorithm will remain personalized for the user. Furthermore, YouTube is offering shared control in this feature, allowing both parents and teens to cancel the supervision at any time.
Parents will be able to use the resources created with Common Sense Networks to guide their teens in creating responsible content.
