The research found that transformers struggle with tasks outside their training data, challenging the notion that AI is on the brink of matching human generalizing capabilities. 

Experts, acknowledging transformers’ advanced nature, caution against overestimating their current capabilities, underlining the need for more advanced AI forms for true generalization. 

Hype vs Reality

Recent reports that OpenAI’s latest AI model has outperformed grade-school levels math predictably fuel fears of an AI-driven apocalypse and a dystopian future of mass unemployment.

But, the existing models’ inability to reason and develop new ideas instead of merely parroting information from their training data is emerging as a significant limitation.
